i just think it’s funny that raspberry pi seems to plan their releases around that of apple’s

Doctor Damian handles the medical needs of the Justice League and their children.
He is professional, competent, and kind. More importantly, he asks very few questions and is one of the few medical professionals who know how to treat metas and aliens without making them feel less than a person or some mythical saviour.
For the children and young heroes, he speaks to them like any adult. He may lecture them about ignoring his orders, but they have seen him do the same to Batman, so it doesn't feel as condescending. He keeps their secrets unless it's life threatening and doesn't judge.
He even brings in his pets on vaccination days and after big fights so they can act as therapy animals.
The doctor keeps drawers of snacks and food on hand for any who want them, and everyone who leaves his office does so with lollipops and stickers, so matter their age.
Superman especially likes the blue raspberry, and Batman gets little cow shaped stickers stuck to his cape.
Flash has to restock Damians snack drawer every time he or another member of his family empties it in a speedster snack emergency.
He is a very good doctor and the only one who can pull any JL member from duty at any time, no matter their seniority
His work and compassion earn him a fanclub.
Nightwing may be your favourite hero's favourite hero, but the entire Justice League will do just about anything for their doctor.
Damian is brought coffee after long shifts, and every hero team has his takeout orders memorised.
If he is out on the field, no one gets near him while he works on patients.
The kid heroes follow him like puppies, so Damian teaches them first aid and praises their progress in training.
Some even learn how to swordfight with the doctor.
Damian has snuck more than one into Gotham so they can volunteer at his childrens hospital like he did at that age.
Others join his siblings and hang out at his apartment when they need a safe space.
The younger heroes invite him to game nights and come to him for advice.
The older heroes treat him with more respect than Batman half the time.
Even Batman listens to his orders without question. He is the only one who can get away with lecturing the whole Bat clan without consequence.
Some newer members try to date him only to be met with a wall of protective clingy heroes with strong opinions.
One probationary member doesn't take Damians no as an answer and makes the mistake of bragging about how he will 'convince' him one way or another.
He is only alive because Black Canary caught them trying to sacrifice him to Santa Claus.
The guy is banned from League functions until he completely 200 hours of HR training and completes a pych eval.
He was not the only victim of the fan club but the one that taught the cape community a very important lesson.
Doctor Damian Wayne is to be handled extreme caution. He may have taken an oath to do no harm. His gremlins have no such mercy.
Needless to say, when Jonathan Kent realises he is in love with his best friend, he knows he will be in for the hardest fight of his life.
But Damian, who had managed to befriend even the surliest of heroes through the Alfred Pennyworth method of keeping them alive and well fed, was definitely worth it.
Jon asks Damian on a date when he is sure none of the man's baby heroes can hear them. 500 feet in the air.
Jon is bewitched by the way Damian blushes as he says yes.
Jon gets to kiss him after their first dinner, heart soaring as Damian deepens it.
As the weeks go on, Jon carefully starts to integrate himself into the hangouts Damian accidentally hosts at his apartment. He brings pizza and soft drinks.
Eventually, he is invited to game nights, earning respect and admiration through Ma Kents Pies and his gaming skills.
Jon teaches the younger heroes about mastering their powers and shares stories from the supersons, much to Damians embarrassment.
Slowly, the baby hereos comes to him with their problems. Come to him for comfort or just to use him as a not so human shield from a worried Damian.
When Jon slips up at a movie night and kisses Damian in front of the kids, he expects to be tackled or shot.
What he does not expect is for the young heroes to scrunch up their faces and shout ewwwww.
"Wait, You Knew!!"
"That you and Mom are together? Obviously"
"I am not a mother!" Damian shouts indignant.
Jon laughs "You kinda are though."

He's been forced into retirement. At least, that's what he tells everyone for the first few years, unable to fight the urge to get out in the field at every opportunity and being shot down. He sticks around the academy, and they allow him to still teach and help the next generation of ninja grow into well-rounded shinobi, for two reasons: he's an incredibly skilled and talented ninja that can pass on all of his skills, and he goes absolutely stir crazy trying to find something to do with his life after finishing Icha Icha.
Truthfully, he'd finished the series within the first 48 hours of his retirement, then re-read the damn series twice over before he finally got sick of it all. He couldn't take the lack of, well, anything.
Throughout his life he's fought countless battles, lost loved ones, and even the war took its toll on his body and his mind. But he misses it. Misses the action, misses the rush and the thrill. He's restless. His fingers twitch when he's sitting for too long, his legs bouncing and tapping on the floor when he's stood still in the kitchen waiting for a meal to finish on the stove. Even cooking can't seem to keep him occupied enough.
But he manages, eventually. Runs and works out in almost all of his free time, waking up at the crack of dawn to train himself for nothing every morning. Cooks every single meal and even bakes more desserts than he could possibly eat in his lifetime, brings all of his extra cupcakes and pies to his students when he finally has a new class. Not a team, no, he's been relegated to indoor classroom settings only. Nothing that could get him out in the field. And he tries to read new books. Nothing really catches his eye though, not enough to gerner his attention like he needs it to.
But then you show up.
You, a pretty young thing that's moved from the Hidden Mist village to come teach the young about your own village's history. It's part of the new initiative Naruto put in, once he'd finally reached his dream of becoming Hokage and got the village back in order. You're part of a group of eight shinobi, two from each major village, who were assigned to Konoha to begin a sort of fusion between the villages. Eight of the leaf's shinobi were sent out to the other villages as well.
He'd only managed to notice you while he was dropping off some of those extra desserts he'd made to occupy his time. You caught his eye like sunlight through stained glass, displaying to the students a few water-style jutsu that the Mist had perfected long ago and passed down through generations. He was mesmerized. You moved like the tides, body fluid like water, graceful and powerful. Clearly you'd mastered these techniques on an entirely different level, the motions so fluent you could probably do them in your sleep.
That's all it took for him to latch onto you. He's infatuated, really. After watching the demonstration, he actually offers you and your students the lemon-raspberry cookies he'd made last night. He talked with you for what must have been hours after that, all your classes having finished for the day and you strolled through Konoha. It was your first day, you'd said, and you were still trying to figure out the layout of the village.
"It's a lot bigger than the Mist. I didn't know what to expect if I'm being honest. I got here yesterday afternoon, and got lost on the way to school this morning." You laugh then, and he finds himself laughing with you. He offers to give you an escort whenever you find yourself needing one, offers to show you all the good food and the prettiest spots to laze in the sun.
It's about three months in that he finds himself actively looking for you during his morning run through the village. Not around the village, not anymore, ever since you'd moved here. He changed his entire running route to be able to spot you if you'd gotten lost, and then detoured to get you back on the path to school. Hell, he even walks you all the way to the front door of your classroom.
It takes him far too long to admit to himself that he's developing romantic feelings for you.
And he's a little ashamed about the whole thing.
He knows he's getting older, mid-late forties, dangerously close to fifty but he won't admit that to anyone if they ask. If his hair weren't already white, it'd be noticeably graying. His body's gotten just a little softer with age, but he stays as active as he can. He won't deny he's no spring chicken.
But you're young, maybe a little over half his age, can't be older than thirty. It's...strange. You're younger than any of Team 7, who he considers his children, but somehow you've circumvented that entirely. Maybe it's because he hadn't watched you grow up, maybe it's because you seem so accomplished and put-together, maybe it's because he still feels like he's a younger man than he is. But it's strange.
It's strange, and he feels a little guilty, especially when he's all alone late at night and his mind wanders a little too far back to Icha Icha. Especially when he's tenting his boxers and rubbing one out to ease the tension and suddenly all he can see in his mind is you. Especially when the post-nut clarity hits him like a truck, because he knows what people say and think about an age gap that large.

And then he's yearning for you. Looking for your face everywhere, seeking you out whenever he finds another class to teach, visiting you after you finish your classes to drop off another tray of sweets. He's walked you home more times than he can count now, and he's watched your eyes light up as the sun sets behind the treeline and paints the sky in brilliant orange and pink hues. You'd never seen such beautiful sunsets. You say the Hidden Mist is always cloudy or shrouded in a thick fog, so the sky is always gray unless the sun is at its peak and can shine down enough to break through the mist.
He loves watching you watch the sun set. He loves watching you teach the kids. He loves watching you perform jutsu he's never seen before. He loves walking you to class every morning even though you already know your way around the village by now. He loves being in your presence, and hearing your voice, and seeing you smile and hearing you laugh at all his stupid jokes.
He's so far gone. The worst part is that he won't do anything about it. Because there's no way a pretty, young thing like you could be any kind of interested in someone like him. Aged, retired, his lease on life far from new. Not a chance you'd even consider him a suitor in any fashion.

But you're not afraid, no, you're excited about something. Then, you stop in your tracks, and face him head-on. His heart races in his chest, his fingers trembling, his feet stepping toward the treeline.
He's excited. His body moves before his mind can really make the executive decision, and he's standing beside you on your branch. I also don't think most people know that foundation language models only have to be trained twice, and that's only if it needs instruction following. Or that they don't actually have to be trillions of parameters to function. or that dedicated tensor processing units exist that make their computations more efficient. or that you can run distillations on a raspberry pi. or that there are actually many many options in implementation. or that most every current problem with ai stems from corporate malfeasance at scale.
previous waves of headlines on AIs resource use that many are still citing on tumblr today were found to be grossly inflated and misrepresented due to an error. and consistent reductions in energy use continue to be achieved in the current state of the art. also the term "AI" refers to a field of computer science rather than a badge of attainment of human levels of prediction in a program.

my dad built huge model trains that were tophographically accurate to the neighborhood he lived in. he programmed the train himself on raspberry pi, and did all of this in the 90s. no offense mom, but he’s kind of a genius.

KnowBe4, a US-based security vendor, revealed that it unwittingly hired a North Korean hacker who attempted to load malware into the company's network. KnowBe4 CEO and founder Stu Sjouwerman described the incident in a blog post this week, calling it a cautionary tale that was fortunately detected before causing any major problems.
"First of all: No illegal access was gained, and no data was lost, compromised, or exfiltrated on any KnowBe4 systems," Sjouwerman wrote. “This is not a data breach notification, there was none. See it as an organizational learning moment I am sharing with you. If it can happen to us, it can happen to almost anyone. Don't let it happen to you.”
KnowBe4 said it was looking for a software engineer for its internal IT AI team. The firm hired a person who, it turns out, was from North Korea and was "using a valid but stolen US-based identity" and a photo that was "enhanced" by artificial intelligence. There is now an active FBI investigation amid suspicion that the worker is what KnowBe4's blog post called "an Insider Threat/Nation State Actor."
KnowBe4 operates in 11 countries and is headquartered in Florida. It provides security awareness training, including phishing security tests, to corporate customers. If you occasionally receive a fake phishing email from your employer, you might be working for a company that uses the KnowBe4 service to test its employees' ability to spot scams.
Person Passed Background Check and Video Interviews
KnowBe4 hired the North Korean hacker through its usual process. "We posted the job, received résumés, conducted interviews, performed background checks, verified references, and hired the person. We sent them their Mac workstation, and the moment it was received, it immediately started to load malware," the company said.
Even though the photo provided to HR was fake, the person who was interviewed for the job apparently looked enough like it to pass. KnowBe4's HR team "conducted four video conference based interviews on separate occasions, confirming the individual matched the photo provided on their application," the post said. "Additionally, a background check and all other standard pre-hiring checks were performed and came back clear due to the stolen identity being used. This was a real person using a valid but stolen US-based identity. The picture was AI 'enhanced.'"

The employee, referred to as "XXXX" in the blog post, was hired as a principal software engineer. The new hire's suspicious activities were flagged by security software, leading KnowBe4's Security Operations Center (SOC) to investigate:
On July 15, 2024, a series of suspicious activities were detected on the user beginning at 9:55 pm EST. When these alerts came in KnowBe4's SOC team reached out to the user to inquire about the anomalous activity and possible cause. XXXX responded to SOC that he was following steps on his router guide to troubleshoot a speed issue and that it may have caused a compromise. The attacker performed various actions to manipulate session history files, transfer potentially harmful files, and execute unauthorized software. He used a Raspberry Pi to download the malware. SOC attempted to get more details from XXXX including getting him on a call. XXXX stated he was unavailable for a call and later became unresponsive. At around 10:20 pm EST SOC contained XXXX's device.
“Fake IT Worker From North Korea”
The SOC analysis indicated that the loading of malware "may have been intentional by the user," and the group "suspected he may be an Insider Threat/Nation State Actor," the blog post said.
"We shared the collected data with our friends at Mandiant, a leading global cybersecurity expert, and the FBI, to corroborate our initial findings. It turns out this was a fake IT worker from North Korea," Sjouwerman wrote.
KnowBe4 said it can't provide much detail because of the active FBI investigation. But the person hired for the job may have logged into the company computer remotely from North Korea, Sjouwerman explained:
How this works is that the fake worker asks to get their workstation sent to an address that is basically an "IT mule laptop farm." They then VPN in from where they really physically are (North Korea or over the border in China) and work the night shift so that they seem to be working in US daytime. The scam is that they are actually doing the work, getting paid well, and give a large amount to North Korea to fund their illegal programs. I don't have to tell you about the severe risk of this. It's good we have new employees in a highly restricted area when they start, and have no access to production systems. Our controls caught it, but that was sure a learning moment that I am happy to share with everyone.

Mythbusting Generative AI: The Ethical ChatGPT Is Out There
I've been hyperfixating learning a lot about Generative AI recently and here's what I've found - genAI doesn’t just apply to chatGPT or other large language models.
Small Language Models (specialised and more efficient versions of the large models)
are also generative
can perform in a similar way to large models for many writing and reasoning tasks
are community-trained on ethical data
and can run on your laptop.

"But isn't analytical AI good and generative AI bad?"
Fact: Generative AI creates stuff and is also used for analysis
In the past, before recent generative AI developments, most analytical AI relied on traditional machine learning models. But now the two are becoming more intertwined. Gen AI is being used to perform analytical tasks – they are no longer two distinct, separate categories. The models are being used synergistically.
For example, Oxford University in the UK is partnering with open.ai to use generative AI (ChatGPT-Edu) to support analytical work in areas like health research and climate change.

Fact: there are Generative AI models developed on ethical data sets
Yes, many large language models scraped sites like AO3 without consent, incorporating these into their datasets to train on. That’s not okay.
But there are Small Language Models (compact, less powerful versions of LLMs) being developed which are built on transparent, opt-in, community-curated data sets – and that can still perform generative AI functions in the same way that the LLMS do (just not as powerfully). You can even build one yourself.

Dolly (Databricks): Trained on open, crowd-sourced instructions
RedPajama (Together.ai): Focused on creative-commons licensed and public domain data
There's a ton more examples here.
(A word of warning: there are some SLMs like Microsoft’s Phi-3 that have likely been trained on some of the datasets hosted on the platform huggingface (which include scraped web content like from AO3), and these big companies are being deliberately sketchy about where their datasets came from - so the key is to check the data set. All SLMs should be transparent about what datasets they’re using).
"But AI harms the environment, so any use is unethical."
Fact: There are small language models that don't use massive centralised data centres.
SLMs run on less energy, don’t require cloud servers or data centres, and can be used on laptops, phones, Raspberry Pi’s (basically running AI locally on your own device instead of relying on remote data centres)

It means everything – and nothing
Everything – in the sense that it might remove some of the barriers and concerns people have which makes them reluctant to use AI. This may lead to more people using it - which will raise more questions on how to use it well.
It also means that nothing's changed – because even these ethical Small Language Models should be used in the same way as the other AI tools - ethically, transparently and responsibly.
So now what? Now, more than ever, we need to be having an open, respectful and curious discussion on how to use AI well in writing.
In the area of creative writing, it has the potential to be an awesome and insightful tool - a psychological mirror to analyse yourself through your stories, a narrative experimentation device (e.g. in the form of RPGs), to identify themes or emotional patterns in your fics and brainstorming when you get stuck -
but it also has capacity for great darkness too. It can steal your voice (and the voice of others), damage fandom community spirit, foster tech dependency and shortcut the whole creative process.

Just to add my two pence at the end - I don't think it has to be so all-or-nothing. AI shouldn't replace elements we love about fandom community; rather it can help fill the gaps and pick up the slack when people aren't available, or to help writers who, for whatever reason, struggle or don't have access to fan communities.
People who use AI as a tool are also part of fandom community. Let's keep talking about how to use AI well.

I didn’t think I’d need to say this, but apparently I do:
Don’t use the Raspberry Pi 2040 to build a DCC decoder.
It’s not really wrong, of course, and it gives you ridiculous amounts of computing power, but to get that you need miles and miles of extra components. Like a dozen of decoupling capacitors, an external oscillator, and of course an external flash memory. You can maybe do that sort of thing in H0, but for real model trains, it’s just not ideal. Pick something like an ATTiny or STM32C0 (I’ve done both for different projects): Cheap, just one or two decoupling capacitors, no external oscillator required and no external flash memory needed either.
The versions of the RP2350 with built in memory may be a better idea, once they fix the GPIO issues anyway, but still, there’s the oscillator and just way too many capacitors.
(Some of these concerns may be different if you want to add sound support, which requires more memory anyway. But I’d argue that sound in model railroads is a mistake anyway. I’ve never seen an N scale locomotive that sounds good, it’s all just an annoying expensive gimmick.)
Also while we’re at it, don’t use a cheap standard bridge rectifier. The steep slopes of the DCC signal mandate a really fast rectifier, typically Schottky diodes. This is particularly important when you have RailCom on your layout. You may need four individual diodes instead of one rectifier, but since you won’t need all the capacitors of the RP2040, you still win out in the end (it’s also typically smaller than the rather large SMD standard rectifiers).
This is a call-out post for https://github.com/gab-k/RP2040-Decoder . It’s a useful project, but it’s also far from ideal.

Applied AI - Integrating AI With a Roomba
AKA. What have I been doing for the past month and a half

Everyone loves Roombas. Cats. People. Cat-people. There have been a number of Roomba hacks posted online over the years, but an often overlooked point is how very easy it is to use Roombas for cheap applied robotics projects.
Continuing on from a project done for academic purposes, today's showcase is a work in progress for a real-world application of Speech-to-text, actionable, transformer based AI models. MARVINA (Multimodal Artificial Robotics Verification Intelligence Network Application) is being applied, in this case, to this Roomba, modified with a Raspberry Pi 3B, a 1080p camera, and a combined mic and speaker system.

The hardware specifics have been a fun challenge over the past couple of months, especially relating to the construction of the 3D mounts for the camera and audio input/output system.
Roomba models are particularly well suited to tinkering - the serial connector allows the interface of external hardware - with iRobot (the provider company) having a full manual for commands that can be sent to the Roomba itself. It can even play entire songs! (Highly recommend)
Scope:
Current:
The aim of this project is to, initially, replicate the verbal command system which powers the current virtual environment based system.

This has been achieved with the custom MARVINA AI system, which is interfaced with both the Pocket Sphinx Speech-To-Text (SpeechRecognition · PyPI) and Piper-TTS Text-To-Speech (GitHub - rhasspy/piper: A fast, local neural text to speech system) AI systems. This gives the AI the ability to do one of 8 commands, give verbal output, and use a limited-training version of the emotional-empathy system.
This has mostly been achieved. Now that I know it's functional I can now justify spending money on a better microphone/speaker system so I don't have to shout at the poor thing!
The latency time for the Raspberry PI 3B for each output is a very spritely 75ms! This allows for plenty of time between the current AI input "framerate" of 500ms.
Future - Software:
Subsequent testing will imbue the Roomba with a greater sense of abstracted "emotion" - the AI having a ground set of emotional state variables which decide how it, and the interacting person, are "feeling" at any given point in time.
This, ideally, is to give the AI system a sense of motivation. The AI is essentially being given separate drives for social connection, curiosity and other emotional states. The programming will be designed to optimise for those, while the emotional model will regulate this on a seperate, biologically based, system of under and over stimulation.
In other words, a motivational system that incentivises only up to a point.
The current system does have a system implemented, but this only has very limited testing data. One of the key parts of this project's success will be to generatively create a training data set which will allow for high-quality interactions.

The future of MARVINA-R will be relating to expanding the abstracted equivalent of "Theory-of-Mind". - In other words, having MARVINA-R "imagine" a future which could exist in order to consider it's choices, and what actions it wishes to take.
This system is based, in part, upon the Dyna-lang model created by Lin et al. 2023 at UC Berkley ([2308.01399] Learning to Model the World with Language (arxiv.org)) but with a key difference - MARVINA-R will be running with two neural networks - one based on short-term memory and the second based on long-term memory. Decisions will be made based on which is most appropriate, and on how similar the current input data is to the generated world-model of each model.
Once at rest, MARVINA-R will effectively "sleep", essentially keeping the most important memories, and consolidating them into the long-term network if they lead to better outcomes.
This will allow the system to be tailored beyond its current limitations - where it can be designed to be motivated by multiple emotional "pulls" for its attention.
This does, however, also increase the number of AI outputs required per action (by a magnitude of about 10 to 100) so this will need to be carefully considered in terms of the software and hardware requirements.

Here is the current prototyping setup for MARVINA-R. As of a couple of weeks ago, I was able to run the entire RaspberryPi and applied hardware setup and successfully interface with the robot with the components disconnected.
I'll upload a video of the final stage of initial testing in the near future - it's great fun!
The main issues really do come down to hardware limitations. The microphone is a cheap ~$6 thing from Amazon and requires you to shout at the poor robot to get it to do anything! The second limitation currently comes from outputting the text-to-speech, which does have a time lag from speaking to output of around 4 seconds. Not terrible, but also can be improved.
To my mind, the proof of concept has been created - this is possible. Now I can justify further time, and investment, for better parts and for more software engineering!

Random fic, Alan on the topic of his brother Jason’s animals and the showing of such.

Jason was the most put-together looking person in the barn- his whites crisp and pristine, practically glowing he was so clean, and his hair absolutely perfect- and the knowledge their mom would’ve killed him the second there weren’t witnesses if he ruined any of that was all that kept Alan from giving him a hug and mussing his hair. He was certain it would’ve helped with the nerves that were making him fidget, biting back cinders, but this was a serious competition, as he couldn’t take that risk. Instead all his poor baby brother got was a firm pat on the shoulder.
“You’ve got this,” he said. Taking in a breath far too deep to be human, Jason gave a curt nod and pasted on a confident smile.
“Yeah, yeah,” he said, then huffed out some of the air, teeth clicked shut around the cinders. “I’m gonna go check on the idiots, okay?”
“Alright.” Alan patted his shoulder again and gave him a gentle push forward. “I’ll be scoping out the competition for you.”
“Tell me if you see anything interesting?”
“Of course. Now go on, git, your birds need you.” He shooed him as he said it, responding to the raspberry blown his way with one of his own. Still, Jason’s shoulders relaxed just a fraction as he headed off to check on his turkeys. Waiting until he was out of earshot, Alan looked around for any potential audience before kneeling beside the pen they’d just be fussing over.
“Muffin, Cherry,” he said, tapping the floor in an attempt to get their attention. Muffin turned to him, walked up to the side of the pen and started begging for treats, but Cherry couldn’t have been less interested if she was trying. “I’m counting on you to bring in this win. Don’t fail me.”
This same thing had been said to his brother’s chickens, and to his prize guinea Pig. Jason had been showing animals for the last four years and placed exactly once so far, with one of the crested bantams that were actually the reason they had peafowl in the first place. The summer after the Highbreed Invasion the Tennysons had come out to the fair to lend their emotional support and Ben had been apparently unable to keep his mouth shut about the poor cresteds and how ‘funny’ they looked. Jason had taken this as a personal insult- likely not helped by Alan, Helen, Kevin, and Grandma Eva’s own responses- and after Kevin had let slip that Ben was scared of peacocks, and also just happened to find an unreasonable amount of money to give him for his birthday, and a few trades with other owners over the last two years…
They now had ten peafowl on the farm, alongside four guinea hens, three turkeys, and about a dozen crested polish bantams, all belonging to Jason. Plus he’d asked for a puppy for Christmas, though he hadn’t gotten it. Alan had not let it be missed that he had only ever wanted to show cattle, which you only needed one of. His mom had not been moved, and unfortunately three grandma’s didn’t trump her. But if he wasn’t going to compete anymore, having long gotten tired of showing goats and poultry, the least he could do was try to get some wins for his siblings.
In all honesty he didn’t have much hope for Muffin, the oaten peacock was only two and his train looked awful because of it, but Cherry was a perfectly fine pied peahen and he had his fingers crossed. Alan hadn’t even bothered to talk with Sarah’s harlequin rabbit, he was certain he was bombproof and near as he could tell from hearing other people talk seemed like a shoe-in for the Under-13 crowd. Chris was exhibiting eggs and vegetables, so there wasn’t much he could do there. Really all he had left was to talk to the turkeys, maybe bring Manny around as a subtle threat, and he would be out of valid options.
“Treats,” he said, as Muffin continued to beg, “are for ribbon holders. Remember that.” Shaking a finger at him, he straightened back up and gazed out over the other gamefowl. With any luck, they were all crap.
His brother put in a lot of work, and damnit he deserved a win.

I worked at radio shack from 2013 to 2015 in the middle of the downward spiral and boy let me tell you, it was a shit show. Every single person who worked for that company knew that everything the higher-ups were doing was the dumbest possible business decision you could make. Middle-managers would constantly hound employees about phone sales and basically told them to forget about everything else. No training whatsoever on electronic parts like diodes and transistors. No training for the Raspberry Pi's that were sold. No training for CB radios, antennas, computer parts, writing CDs, security cameras, or soldering tools. We sold all that but the training began and ended with "yeah that'll be $49.99". Even when someone came in for stuff like that, they were constantly surprised at how expensive they were in comparison to the local stores. Which is really crazy for a company of that size, it's usually the old story of "why go to the local store for this little piece, the big retailer has it for half that price". If it wasn't an overpriced cell phone with an overpriced plan and an overpriced phone case attached, you were worthless to them and would be replaced.
Does anyone remember what happened to Radio Shack?
They started out selling niche electronics supplies. Capacitors and transformers and shit. This was never the most popular thing, but they had an audience, one that they had a real lock on. No one else was doing that, so all the electronics geeks had to go to them, back in the days before online ordering. They branched out into other electronics too, but kept doing the electronic components.
Eventually they realize that they are making more money selling cell phones and remote control cars than they were with those electronic components. After all, everyone needs a cellphone and some electronic toys, but how many people need a multimeter and some resistors?
So they pivoted, and started only selling that stuff. All cellphones, all remote control cars, stop wasting store space on this niche shit.
And then Walmart and Target and Circuit City and Best Buy ate their lunch. Those companies were already running big stores that sold cellphones and remote control cars, and they had more leverage to get lower prices and selling more stuff meant they had more reasons to go in there, and they couldn't compete. Without the niche electronics stuff that had been their core brand, there was no reason to go to their stores. Everything they sold, you could get elsewhere, and almost always for cheaper, and probably you could buy 5 other things you needed while you were there, stuff Radio Shack didn't sell.
And Radio Shack is gone now. They had a small but loyal customer base that they were never going to lose, but they decided to switch to a bigger but more fickle customer base, one that would go somewhere else for convenience or a bargain. Rather than stick with what they were great at (and only they could do), they switched to something they were only okay at... putting them in a bigger pond with a lot of bigger fish who promptly out-competed them.
If Radio Shack had stayed with their core audience, who knows what would have happened? Maybe they wouldn't have made a billion dollars, but maybe they would still be around, still serving that community, still getting by. They may have had a small audience, but they had basically no competition for that audience. But yeah, we only know for sure what would happen if they decided to attempt to go more mainstream: They fail and die. We know for sure because that's what they did.
I don't know why I keep thinking about the story of what happened to Radio Shack. It just keeps feeling relevant for some reason.
